I haven't seen the movie since I owned it and when the flower grew it was like hey balm and I was like hey because I saw it was a girl.
So yes, balm, tar and flowers are all boys but girls.
As others have said, a child. It's like the musical Oliver (Carol Reid, 1968) when all the kids are little girls, especially when Oliver's voice is actually female, hahaha.
