JK Rowling confirmed in an interview that he was a hunter.

He must be a hunter. The film simply makes James an investigator in order to keep it simple and straightforward.

James Terry is a researcher. He explains that in the first book and film, when Hermione sent him the Guartus trophy, there was a poster saying that James had a secretary. JKR could say he is a hunter, but he has messed up his position. So there may be words in other books that say he was a hunter, but now James Ter was a hunter, not a hunter.
In movies he is a seeker, in books he is a hunter.
James is a seeker because he got his Sn in the fifth book after the game and because Harry is called Seker because he likes the plaque on the wall in the Gwarts Trophy room.
